The title might suggest the name of a rock group, but this book is very specifically about Abraham Lincoln's other legacy that is rarely discussed ---- his family. Unlike other famous families, the Lincoln family didn't go forward and multiply like rabbits. Of Abe and Mary's four sons, only Robert Todd Lincoln survived to marry, have children, and die of old age. RTL wasn't born to a prosperous or wealthy family and at the time of his father's death there was no great family fortune. Through what I presume was intelligence and highly placed social and political connections, Robert was placed in a unique set of circumstances which gave him limitless social and political opportunities and aided him in accumulating real wealth which would translate into real wealth as evidenced by a family trust.RTL was a fortunate man as translated by most standards of his time. He was also a man who seemed to be a magnet for tragedies.He witnessed three presidential assassinations, lost his only son to a tragically young death as well as his only surviving brother Tad. He had a tumultuous relationship with his widowed mother who he had declared insane. Their fractured relationship would dog him for the rest of his life.His surviving progeny and their children were disappointing as well. While Robert and the rest of his family appeared to be extremely private, his children and grandchildren were not immune to scandal or public scrutiny. The family legacy included adultery, alcohol and drug abuse, and overindulgence. There was little reverence for the family legacy and, in fact, there was a most deliberate effort to reinvent the family history and embellish it.The branch of the family that was the the most scandal ridden was associated with Robert's daughter Jessie Lincoln and her kids the Beckwiths. Even late in life, grandson Bob Beckwith brought many layers of scandal that eventually challenged the Lincoln legend and the monetary trust even after Beckwith's death.If you are a student of all things relating to Lincoln, there may be lot of things that you never knew. You may even be shocked. This book is very heavily researched and provides a wealth of information. It answered a lot of little and big questions i had and revealed a back story that had been overlooked in the past. I couldn't put this book down.My only criticism, and this is actually relatively minor, is a connection the author attempts to make between great grandson Bob Beckwith and a man named Jack Coffelt who he presumes is the real identity of the plane hijacker D.B. Cooper. His theory, like the other ones floating about re: Cooper, borders on a cliche. It's interesting to speculate, but this tends to muddy the story about a family that had their own little civil war.
